Growing up in Hawai'i, there was always an abundance of Sugarcane in our backyard; the colors would range from white, green, purple, red, or yellow. Despite the fibers getting stuck in your teeth, it's always been a great snack to chew on and even a refreshing juice to drink. Sugarcane can withstand harsh conditions and still produce sugar, demonstrating the value of perseverance in the face of challenges. Sugarcane has stood the test of time through storms and harsh temperatures throughout the inconsistent climate the day brings. But through it all, it stands tall and never fails to produce what it was "made for," sugar.

It reminds me of the words of Paul in Romans 5:3-4:

​

"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

​

 

Rather than viewing trials as mere obstacles, we are encouraged to see them as opportunities for growth. Suffering teaches us to persevere and become resilient, which strengthens our character and instills in us a hope that surpasses earthly circumstances. Again, a sugar cane's perseverance through any weather is a reminder that every challenge we face is shaping us into the individuals we were meant to be. So, I encourage you today to stand tall like a sugar cane, no matter what may come your way, and allow the sweetness of your purpose to be fully produced within you.
